Adrenal Gland

An adrenal gland is located on the top of each kidney.

  • Stroma
    • - enclosed by a thin layer of connective tissue.
    • - penetrate the capsule and branch into capillaries that supply the cortex and medulla.
  • Parenchyma
    • - cells that synthesize and secrete steroid hormones.
      • - outer zone (15%) of glomerular-like clusters of cells and secrete aldosterone. The have a central nucleus and lipid filled ("foamy") cytoplasm.
      • - middle zone (80%) of two-cell wide vertical cords that secrete cortisol. The have a central nucleus and lipid filed ("foamy") cytoplasm.
      • - inner zone (7%) of one-cell wide anastomosing rows that secrete precursors of testosterone. The have a central nucleus and eosinophilic cytoplasm often with .
      • - rich network of blood vessels.
      • - modified postganglionic sympathetic neurons that secrete catecholamines (epinephrine or norepinephrine).
      • - infrequent sympathetic ganglion cells.
      • - drain into larger veins that leave the organ
