MH 113 Fundic Stomach

Fundic Stomach

This specimen contains furrows in the mucosa that divides the surface of the stomach into bulging irregular areas called .

  • : Surface invaginations lined with surface mucous cells
  • : Long glands that contain three main cell types:
    • : Scattered narrow, basophilic cells found in the isthmus and neck between parietal cells
      • Basophilic due to abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum
      • Mucus in secretory cells appear pale or slightly basophilic
    • : Strongly eosinophilic cells with a large, oval shape and a central nucleus found throughout the gland
      • Bright pink-red staining results from their extraordinarily abundant mitochondria
      • Energy-demanding process of acid secretion via H+/K+ ATPase pumps
    • : Smaller, basophilic cells found in the lower portions of the glands
      • Basophilic, particularly in their basal cytoplasm, due to abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum
      • Synthesize pepsinogen and other digestive enzymes

The contents of the stomach, called chyme, is mixed and propelled by slow waves of rhythmic contractions called peristalsis.

  • : Ganglion cells and fibers in the submucosa that regulate smooth muscle cells in the submucosa and muscularis mucosae.
  • : Ganglion cells and fibers between layers of the muscularis externa that regulate their contraction.
